In California, and a few other southwest states, Cesar Chavez Day is celebrated alongside other notable people in the United Farm Workers movement. This includes Dolores Huerta, one of his co-founders of this organization, in which they fought for migrant farmer rights. They are considered to be civil rights heroes for the Mexican and Latino communities alongside Filipinos and other migrant farm workers from various backgrounds.
Historically migrant farmers have worked in terrible conditions, for low pay with little breaks and deplorable living conditions. One ongoing issue is child labor. Many migrant workers are still paid by how many crops they produce and pick and often their children help them with this process, missing school.
This resource I created explores these issues and the history of two notable leaders in this movement. Cesar Chavez and Dolores Huerta.
You can find it here or click the picture. This resource is suitable for upper elementary and beyond.
Here are some affiliate links to great children's books about this topic.
Included is Larry Itilong, another organizer and leader in the movement, who spoke directly on behalf of the Filipino workers.
